December Newsletter 2010

Despite wintry conditions, nearly 40 people attended Chulmleigh Tennis Club’s AGM and social evening at The Red Lion on Thursday 2nd December. With 116 members, the Club has continued to develop and is now working towards Clubmark status under the LTA. A new cup awarded this year was the Sameer Moosa Cup donated by the Sports Centre in South Molton. Chulmleigh Bakery sponsored the Junior Champion’s Cup.

Affiliation with Chulmleigh Recreational Association is proceeding and negotiations are underway to maintain access to the courts during College opening times. At the moment the club has to provide a Chulmleigh Recreational Association CRB volunteer whenever players are using the courts before the community opening time of 6pm. Some members have agreed to undergo community volunteer training, which should help to cover club sessions. Please let the club know if you think you could help in this way.

We have been asked inform the Sports Centre volunteer, in reception, when we turn up to use the courts. This is to let them know that we are using the facilities and to check that no other bookings are in place, as well as ensuring that only bona fide tennis club members are using the courts. Please sign our record book in the floodlight locker, as it could help towards grant applications. A reminder that you can now buy floodlight tokens from the volunteer on duty in the Sports Centre.

Thanks to all those who used the hyperlink on the membership form to join British Tennis, we maintained our allocation of Wimbledon tickets. We could increase this if all members joined up—it’s FREE! You have until the end of January to sign up, then you will be entered not only in the club’s allocation, but the public ballot too. http://www.lta.org.uk/britishtennismembership

Club communication has always been by email, which works well when people read them regularly, but seems more problematic with juniors. We are hoping that someone will volunteer to communicate with these players in a user –friendly fashion.

Warren Danby gave news of the League teams’ brilliant progress for the 2010 season. He asked anyone interested in playing to contact him, in case another men’s team had to be entered. There is still a shortage of women players at this level! So far the winter league teams have won all their matches!

One of our aims this year has been to tighten up on deadlines in order to have a more consistent and professional approach. We are aware that we didn’t always get it right this season, however it is our intention to further tighten deadlines next year.

As was agreed last year, membership fees will be due by 1st April in 2011, so that league players will be ready for the new season and all members will be covered by the club’s insurance. In effect this means that the Early Bird discount applies up to the end of March.

The club welcomed John Griffiths as coach and with his help plans to expand its provision for junior players in 2011. Coaching for the present groups: Minis, Beginner Adults, Juniors and Advanced will continue in the New Year, watch out for information from Sara and Maggie. More beginner adults are needed to make this course viable, older pupils, who have not attended coaching previously, are welcome to join this group. John Griffiths is providing club members with the opportunity for extra 1-1 or small group coaching. Contact him on 07759 408571 for details.
